NW Indiana surveyor indicted on federal fraud charges

HAMMOND -

A county surveyor from northwestern Indiana has been indicted on federal charges alleging he used public employees and resources to run his re-election campaign.

U.S. Attorney David Capp announced Friday that Lake County Surveyor George Van Til faces six felony counts of wire fraud and two counts of obstruction of justice.

Capp says Van Til ordered one surveyor's office employee in November 2011 to do "virtually all" of his campaign work, including picking up a tuxedo for Van Til to wear to a political fundraiser. That employee alleged performed the campaign work while collecting a Lake County salary.

Capp says Van Til instructed another employee to remove a hard drive from a county computer and replace it with another in case federal authorities ever visited the office.
