Seat-belt enforcement campaign runs through June 2

INDIANAPOLIS -

Indiana law enforcement agencies have begun a two-week effort to enforce seat belt use on the state's highways.

The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute says more than 250 law enforcement agencies in this state began conducting special patrols around the clock Friday to identify and ticket unrestrained motorists. The effort concludes June 2.

The institute says that during a similar mobilization a year ago, law enforcement agencies issued more than 18,000 citations to driver who weren't wearing seat belts.

The campaign is tied to the Memorial Day holiday weekend and the start of the summer travel season. The institute says that during last year's campaign, 170 collisions and 12 fatalities occurred on Indiana roadways involving unrestrained motorists, with 91 ejections occurring due to the nonuse of restraints.
