EVANSVILLE -

More than five of every six Indiana third-graders have passed the mandatory state reading test before promotion to the fourth grade.

The Evansville Courier and Press reported Thursday that the Indiana Department of Education says about 86 percent of third-graders passed the Indiana Reading Evaluation And Determination exam, or IREAD-3. That's up from 85 percent last year.

Two-thirds of the test covers reading comprehension, in which students read fiction and nonfiction passages and demonstrate an understanding of them. The rest covers vocabulary skills and word recognition.

Pupils that didn't pass have a second opportunity this summer. Waivers may be offered through September in certain cases for students in special education, those who still are learning English, or those with an individualized education plan or individual learning plan.
