INDIANAPOLIS -

56th Street will reopen to through traffic in both directions Wednesday morning after a pipeline leak closed the street last week.

Marathon Pipeline LLC says repairs are finished.

The street is expected to be open to traffic again by 5:00 am Wednesday. Drivers are advised to use caution when driving through the area as the construction and remediation work continues to wind down.

Marathon Pipeline LLC is looking into what caused the leak in the first place. It occurred on May 9th and resulted in 21,000 gallons of diesel product to leak. Marathon says 21,400 gallons of fuel have been recovered from the site.

Area fire departments along with the county health department have been assisting at the scene.

"Cleanup and any remediation of affected areas will continue in accordance with federal, state and local regulations," Marathon said in a statement. Marathon also thanked the EPA, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), the Marion County Public Health Department and the Pike Township Fire Department "for their leadership and efforts to ensure the public's safety. We also want to thank the public and surrounding community for their cooperation during our response."
