Indianapolis northwest side fuel leak fixed after 20,000 gallons spilled
Marathon Petroleum says a leaking fuel pipeline on the city's northwest side has been fixed and roads on 56th Street are expected back open early Tuesday.
More than 20,000 gallons of diesel fuel spilled from an underground pipe last Thursday between Guion Road and Arabian Run shutting down West 56th Street in Pike Township for five days.
The Marion County Health Department is performing tests to see if there's any contamination.
Marathon Officials tell Eyewitness News they don't know what caused the eight-inch pipe to leak. The pipe runs from the Robinson Refinery in Robinson, Illinois to a terminal facility in Lima, Ohio where trucks pick up fuel for delivery to other stations.
Officials say the stretch of pipe in question was pressurized and contained fuel, but was not in operation or flowing fuel.
Marathon says it has recovered 500 barrels of fuel, or 20,206 gallons.
