A Purdue University professor has won a coveted international prize for his innovative work in chemistry.
Purdue says R. Graham Cooks will receive the $250,000 Dreyfus Prize in Chemical Sciences this fall for his work in mass spectrometry and analytical chemistry.
Cook's work has led to more than 40 patents and spawned four companies
The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation will award the prize during a ceremony on the West Lafayette campus this fall.
Cooks and his team have fine-tuned chemical tools for use in molecular imaging for cancer diagnostics and surgery; therapeutic drug monitoring; testing for biomarkers in urine; and the identification of food-borne pathogens, bacteria, pesticides and explosives residues.
