Work set to start on Indianapolis cricket fields

INDIANAPOLIS -

Construction work is expected to start soon on a $6 million project building fields in an Indianapolis park for cricket matches and other sports.

A city board on Wednesday awarded the first contract for the work at a far-eastside park. The nearly 50-acre complex will have five multiuse fields that will also accommodate lacrosse, Gaelic football, rugby and hurling.

Republican Mayor Greg Ballard has said the project will serve niche sports popular among the city's growing immigrant communities. Ballard spoke during a trip to India last month about his goal of establishing Indianapolis as a cricket capital.

Democratic city councilman William Oliver says money for the fields shouldn't come from a fund that was set up for street, sidewalk and other infrastructure repairs.
