WEST LAFAYETTE -

A Purdue University chemistry professor has become the school's fourth member of the prestigious National Academy of Sciences.

The Journal & Courier reports Joseph Francisco was elected last week. The nonprofit society consults national policymakers on science and technology issues.

University President Mitch Daniels said the honor for Francisco was well deserved, saying he is making his mark through revolutionary research. Francisco solved a 40-year search for an unusual molecule, which could eventually help reduce acid rain. His research also has helped the understanding of chemical atmospheric processes. He also recently identified a new type of chemical bonding called radical-hydrogen bonding.

Francisco is the former president of the American Chemical Society and is also associate dean of research and graduate education for the College of Science.
