School districts work to find drug test funds

Posted: Updated:
FORT WAYNE -

Two Indiana school districts that test students for drug use are facing challenges as they look for ways to fund the programs.

Officials at Southwest Allen County Schools and Smith-Green Community Schools in Churubusco say the screening is an effective deterrent to drug use but that paying for it isn't easy.

The Journal Gazette reports that Southwest Allen has reduced the number of tests it gives to offset the costs. The district uses grants and donations to pay for the $16 tests given to students in grades 6 through 12 who participate in extracurricular activities or drive to school.

Smith-Green pays for its $21 drug tests from the district's general fund. Only high school students who participate in extracurricular activities or drive to school are tested.
