Freight rail service expected to save time to Indy

SOUTH BEND -

Indiana officials and businesses are hoping a new freight rail service into Indianapolis starting this summer will save businesses time and money.

The Indiana Rail Road Co. will partner with Canadian National Railway to provide intermodal service for imports and exports from the Canadian ports of Vancouver and Prince Rupert starting July 1.

Conexus Indiana vice president David Holt says the not-for-profit organization that works to boost the state's manufacturing and logistics industries has been working to get such service for six years.

OSP Group vice president Chip Edgington says having a direct rail option should help central Indiana businesses that ship goods.

The cost savings vary depending on what is being shipped and the delays encountered. Those involved say the most important factor might be the time savings.
