New Broad Ripple parking garage opens

INDIANAPOLIS -

There's a new place to park in Broad Ripple.

The new parking garage at Westfield Blvd. and College Ave. is now open, along with the sidewalks surrounding the garage.

Construction began in 2012 on the garage, which was designed to alleviate parking problems in Broad Ripple. The nightlife destination has been plagued by parking woes. Before the garage was put in, the only place to park was surface lots and street parking.

Westfield Boulevard saw sewer and street improvements in the process of the garage construction.

It's also hoped that the garage will provide a safer alternative to parking on side streets. IMPD Chief of Police Rick Hite has compared Broad Ripple to Memphis' Beale Street or Bourbon Street in New Orleans: a gathering spot for tourists and an attractive nuisance for underage troublemakers.

The increase in crime in the area has been a concern to many. Friday, two men were arrested in connection with the abduction and rape of a woman who was leaving a Broad Ripple bar last December.
