Trails in northwest Indiana are being added to a national walking trail that stretches from Delaware to California.
The Times of Munster reports the northern route of the 6,800-mile-long American Discovery Trail will cut diagonally from North Judson in Starke County through portions of LaPorte, Porter and Lake counties and continue into Illinois at Lansing.
The northern route previously only went as far north in Indiana as the Kankakee River.
The American Discovery Trail doesn't own property along the trail. It designates existing trails and public roadways as part of the national system.
Trail spokesman Ders Anderson says northwest Indiana's abundance of trail development led to the route being changed. He says most hikers use the southern route because of too few campgrounds and hotels on the northern route.
