LAFAYETTE -

North-central Indiana firefighters have rescued two men after their canoe struck an underwater obstruction and overturned in the flooded Wabash River.

The 23-year-old and 18-year-old men were wearing life jackets when they were found beneath a bridge Sunday evening by Lafayette firefighters.

An Indiana Conservation Service news release says a caller standing on a Lafayette pedestrian bridge alerted police about 8:20 p.m. that a canoe with two people had overturned in the flooded river and that three people in a second canoe had tried to help the two men in the water.

Conservation officers say the current was too fast for those canoeists to reach the capsized canoe, but the two men who were thrown in the water were able to swim to shore and were rescued by the firefighters.
