NASHVILLE -

Todd Harrell of 3 Doors Down has been charged with vehicular homicide by intoxication after another motorist died in a crash outside Nashville late Friday.

Police say the bass player was speeding on Interstate 40 when his car clipped a pickup truck. The truck spun out of control, hit a guardrail, went down an embankment and overturned.

The driver, 47-year-old Paul Howard Shoulders Junior, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected. He was pronounced dead at a Nashville hospital.

Police say Harrell showed signs of impairment and told them he had been drinking hard cider and taking the prescription drugs Lortab and Xanax. Harrell was also charged with bringing controlled substances into jail.

Sheriff's deputies say they discovered a plastic bag in his sock containing Xanax, Oxycodone and Oxymorphone. Harrell is in custody in lieu of $100,000 bond.

The band has issued a statement offering condolences to Shoulders' family. Harrell faces a court hearing Thursday.
