Indiana won't push for constitutional convention

MUNSTER -

Indiana lawmakers won't lead a push to try to raise support around the country for a new U.S. constitutional convention aimed at limiting the powers of the federal government.

The Times of Munster reports the Republican-controlled House failed to act before a deadline last week on a resolution previously approved by the Republican-controlled Senate seeking a state-called constitutional convention. The resolution did not advance out of the House Judiciary Committee.

House Speaker Brian Bosma of Indianapolis says state lawmakers may not have been prepared to be the first in the country to call for such a convention. Bosma say his first choice would be to elect people who will rein in the federal government. But he says a constitutional convention could still be an option in the future.
