Water tops Vigo County levees, evacuation possible
TERRE HAUTE -
High water is topping levees in the Terre Haute area and could force evacuations.
Vigo County Emergency Management Agency Deputy Director J.D. Kesler said late Sunday afternoon that water is topping some levees but the barriers haven't failed yet. He says the western Indiana county has a couple of areas where if the levees fail, some evacuations will be necessary.
The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for the Prairieton area south of Terre Haute because Honey Creek is topping a levee there. It says a levee board chairman reports three or four spots where the water is running over the levee and scouring it.
