FISHERS, Ind. -

If you think your morning commute is bad, consider this. Traffic in Indianapolis is among the lightest of the biggest cities in North America. That's according to the navigation service Tom Tom.

One of the biggest projects that will likely slow you down this spring and summer is along U.S. 31 in Hamilton County.  Despite projects like this popping up, there is a reason Indianapolis ranks as the third best large city for congestion, according to Tom Tom.

"IIndiana has invested billions of dollars, not only Indianapolis, but statewide to improve the transportation infrastructure," said INDOT's Nathan Riggs. "In a large part, that's due to money introduced to lease of toll road."

Even though we do well compared to other cities, perception of traffic congestion is subjective.  Remember to give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination and know the cone zones.

"In order to minimize traffic," Riggs said, "a lot of that work will be done during off-peak hours - nighttime and weekends - so we're not impacting weekly commuter traffic. Whenever possible, we do lane widening to shift traffic over."
