Former Notre Dame president to be honored by Navy

SOUTH BEND -

The Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, who served 35 years as president of the University of Notre Dame until he retired in 1987, is going to be recognized as an honorary Navy chaplain.

The ceremony for Hesburgh will be held Wednesday at the library named after the 95-year-old priest on the northern Indiana campus. The Navy chief of chaplains, Rear Adm. Mark Tidd, will attend the ceremony to honor Hesburgh.

The Navy is recognizing Hesburgh because his goal when he was ordained as a priest in 1943 was to become a Navy chaplain, but he was assigned to Notre Dame instead. He became president of the university in 1952 and became known internationally as an advocate for human rights.
