Joan Baez meditated a bit before going back into the bunker in Hanoi where she had to take refuge from U.S. bombing during the Vietnam War 40 years ago.
Instead of being scared, Baez says she felt "this huge warmth" because the bunker took care of her. She put her hand on the cement wall and began singing the spiritual "Oh Freedom."
Baez's visit to Vietnam in December 1972 was the object of public scrutiny because some Americans thought she was giving aid to the enemy. She had gone there to see the war firsthand and to deliver mail to U.S. prisoners.
Baez stayed at the same hotel where she stayed 40 years ago. She says the bunker was her first experience with her own mortality.
