One day after Victor Oladipo declared for the NBA draft, teammate Cody Zeller followed suit.
Indiana University men's basketball coach Tom Crean and All-American Cody Zeller made the announcement Tuesday afternoon on the Assembly Hall court. Oladipo made his announcement Monday.
"Cody Zeller means an awful lot to all of us," said IU men's basketball head coach Tom Crean, who added that it didn't seem that long ago when Zeller made his announcement that he'd be attending IU. "It became one of the most talked-about, trended Googled, tweeted things of the day and certainly helped change things in this program. What Cody means to Indiana, it's much like with Victor. It's hard to describe it."
Crean said Zeller has "helped raise the level of everybody in this program...that's not an easy feat. He's got a unique skill set. He's gone unique athleticism. He's got unprecedented character and just an absolute thrill and joy to watch him work and develop over these last couple of years to get his game and to get our team to where it has been."
"The past two years have been probably the best two years of my life made possible by these coaches, the guys in the locker room, the fans, Indiana students, the people of Bloomington. It's been a great two years, but at this point in my life I think it's best for me to pursue my dream of playing in the NBA," said Zeller.
He said his family and the coaching staff helped him make the decision. "At the end of the day I have to do what's best for me, and I feel this is best for me," he said.
Zeller said he'll treasure his memories of playing at Assembly Hall. "We're a very close group. Both years I was here, with the coaches and the players; I'll carry those relationships through the rest of my life. It's definitely a great place."
The sophomore forward from Washington, Indiana was named a preseason All-American and preseason Player of the Year. In the Big Ten he ranks eighth in scoring, sixth in rebounds and first in field goal percentage. He was also Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
