MUNCIE -

One teenager was taken by air ambulance to Methodist Hospital and five other teenagers were transported to IU Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie after an accident late Saturday night.

Delaware County EMS officials say the SUV that one of the teens was driving, left the road and struck a pole on Burlington Road, which is on the southeast side of Muncie.

Captain Rodney McNeal said the cause of the accident is still under investigation, but did say the area where the accident happened "has hills and lots of curves and that may have been a contributing factor."

The accident happened about ten minutes after eleven.  A nearby resident heard the crash, ran out to check on the victims and called 911.

"We thought a tree fell on the house. It was so loud. We came out and we couldn't see, but we heard all these kids crying and screaming for help," said witness Heidi Hale.

She rushed to the six teens inside the mangled white Jeep. Hale quickly found herself talking to their parents.

"I called the mom. It was the worst feeling ever to tell a Mom that her son is injured, badly injured. I told her we would pray for her," said Hale.

Eighteen-year-old Aaron Kelly, who according to the Muncie Star Press, was flown to Methodist Hospital after the crash is listed in critical condition. Five other teens were taken to Ball Memorial in Muncie. The victims, three boys and three girls range in age from 14 to 18.

"Some had seat beats, some didn't. You can tell by looking at the scene that they may have been driving too fast for the road," said Lt. Arlan Johnson from the Delaware Sheriff's Department.

The Delaware County Sheriff's Department along with county EMS are investigating the crash.

According to the Muncie Central High School website, Prom was held last night at Cornerstone Center for the Arts on Main Street in Muncie. An e-mail from the Muncie School District stated, "the students in the accident last night were not attending Muncie Central's Prom."
