Indiana prof named scholar to religious freedom panel

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -

An Indiana University professor on the Bloomington campus will look at the Arab Spring's impact on religious freedom across the Middle East as a scholar of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom.

The university announced the selection of Iranian studies professor Jamsheed Choksy to the position Wednesday.

He says the removal of dictators and monarchs across the Middle East is not bringing the freedoms that are needed for individual and collective wellbeing.

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom is an independent, bipartisan federal government commission dedicated to defending the universal right to freedom of religion or belief. It reviews the facts and circumstances of religious freedom violations and makes policy recommendations to the president, the secretary of state and Congress.
