INDIANAPOLIS -

Indianapolis Metro Police are now naming the suspect killed in an east side shooting Tuesday night.

William Morris, 24, was killed in the 3600 block of Sherman Drive. An IMPD officer was shot in the arm during the incident that began as a traffic stop, and two others in the car were injured in the shooting.

Morris was a back seat passenger in the suspect vehicle.

It started when a red Chevrolet Blazer ran a stop sign at 36th St. and Gale. Officers stopped the vehicle at 36th and Sherman.

The driver told police he didn't have a valid license and the officers ordered everyone to get out of the vehicle. The driver and the front seat passenger stepped out.

As William Morris was getting out of the back seat, Officer Bryan Zotz and another officer saw him reach between his feet and grab a handgun.

The officers yelled for Morris to put the gun down but he did not comply. Officer Zotz reached into the vehicle and struggled with Morris to grab the gun. Officer Zotz and another officer fired into the Blazer and shot the suspect.

Backseat passengers Jamie Brown, 20, and Famous Thompson, 26, were shot during the struggle. They were taken to Wishard Hospital for treatment.

Officer Zotz was shot in his left arm and was taken to Methodist Hospital for treatment.

The suspect's handgun was recovered. The two officers that were also on scene did not fire their handguns.

Police say two other people who were inside the vehicle were detained for questioning.

Officer Zotz is a 12-year veteran of IMPD. He is recovering from surgery and will be released Wednesday afternoon.

Indianapolis Metro Police are planning a news conference for 2:00 pm Wednesday to offer an update on the officer's condition and the investigation.

Tense moments

Police radio traffic indicated how serious the unfolding situation had just become Tuesday night following a traffic stop on the city's east side.

"We're going to need a medic for an officer shot in the hand," an officer could be heard saying.

The city's Ten Point Coalition, a group of community organizers who raise awareness about the violence, also responded to the scene. They were walking around and talking with neighbors, trying to calm people down in the wake of this shooting.
