INDIANAPOLIS -

The leader of the Indiana House will miss at least the next week of the legislative session following surgery for a knee infection.

A House Republican spokeswoman says Speaker Brian Bosma learned from tests on Monday that an infection had developed in a knee that he had replaced last summer and he needed immediate surgery.

Bosma wasn't present in the House on Monday, and the House statement says he hopes to return to work late next week or soon after.

Bosma will be absent as the General Assembly heads toward its late April deadline for adjourning this year's legislative session.

Major items still being debated include the new two-year state budget and Republican Gov. Mike Pence's proposed individual income tax cut.

Governor Mike Pence (R-IN) released this statement:

"Karen and I were concerned to learn of Speaker Bosma's condition and are praying for a successful surgery and swift recovery. Speaker Bosma is a leader we deeply respect and a personal friend, and we look forward to his return to serving Hoosiers in the coming days."
