Duke Energy is warning Indiana customers about a new bill payment scam.
The scam involves unsolicited phone calls from a person who falsely claims to be a Duke Energy representative. The caller says the energy company will disconnect the customer's electricity unless the customer makes an immediate payment, usually within an hour.
The scammer then tells the customer to buy a prepaid debit card and call back with the card's receipt and PIN numbers. The person then has access to the money loaded on the card.
Duke Energy says it never asks customers who have delinquent accounts to purchase a prepaid debit card to keep their electricity from getting shut off. The company tells customers who experience this scam to hang up and call local police and Duke Energy.
