Housing, meals take hit under federal budget cuts

VINCENNES -

Federal budget cuts are hitting Indiana programs that provide meals and low-cost housing and have forced one agency to cancel its flood insurance.

The cuts known as the sequester kicked in March 1 after Congress and the White House failed reach a deal to reduce the federal deficit.

Indiana agencies have trimmed their own budgets in response. The Seymour Senior Citizens Center has cut the number of days it provides meals from five to three. Cities including Vincennes and Fort Wayne are reducing the number of Section 8 vouchers they provide to low-income residents.

The Vincennes Housing Authority also canceled an $18,000 flood insurance policy because the money was needed elsewhere.

Seymour Senior Citizens Center director Carol Gee says agencies have to learn to make do with what they have.
