IPFW eyes cutting police force, child care

FORT WAYNE -

Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne is looking for deeper cuts than layoffs to help close an $8.4 million budget deficit.

Just last week, the administration announced layoffs that it would eliminate 39 full-time and two part-time positions through layoffs and attrition by the end of June. Now, The Journal Gazette reports the school said Wednesday that it's considering additional cuts, including discontinuing child-care services and outsourcing its police force.

WPTA-TV reports IPFW's Faculty Senate also met Wednesday and pushed the idea of dipping into the school's $18 million reserve fund to cover the deficit.

Faculty members opposed discontinuing child care and said some students say they might have to drop out of school without it.

IPFW has said the shortfall stems state funding shortfalls and much lower enrollment last fall.
