Efforts to change local government face opposition

INDIANAPOLIS -

Efforts aimed at restructuring local governments in two Indiana counties face stiff opposition in the Legislature.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports a House committee passed a bill Tuesday that would require mergers of two units of government such as a city and a county to pass referendums including voters in both units. That would make efforts to merge Evansville and Vanderburgh County more difficult. The merger proposal lost by a wide margin in a countywide vote in November.

Another bill aimed at replacing commissions with a single executive in all 92 counties opposed by the Indiana Association of County Commissioners threatens to derail an effort to make the change in Allen County.

The Journal Gazette reports the commissioners group is concerned about Allen County commissioners' position on the proposal.
