Lingering snow delays schools, pothole patching

INDIANAPOLIS -

Some Indiana roads are still covered in snow and ice, causing several school closings and delays Tuesday morning.

Most of the closings are in far western Indiana communities, including Covington, Attica and Warren County.  See the complete list of closings and delays here.

This is the first time we've seen this much snow this late in the year. Even so, just before this snow hit, the City of Indianapolis had spent just under half its $8.4-million snow budget.  Even though well under budget, city snow removal managers didn't think they needed to call out private contractors to work side streets.

"We didn't think it was warranted, given the pavement temperatures," said Stephanie Sample of the Indianapolis Department of Public Works.

INDOT also reports spending much less than their average for the year, in part because it's become more efficient in snow removal.

This late snow and the efforts used to remove it will impact other projects down the road. The first thaw of the season brings not only flowers, but potholes. And with each freeze and thaw cycle, more potholes spring up.

City crews had already begun filling in holes this year. But the spring snow put a damper on those efforts.  The same budget used for snow removal also goes toward pothole repair.

Sample said the late snow will make potholes worse. "And that's something we're going to start dealing with as soon as we get the snow off the roads," she said. "We're going to shift from snow back to potholes."

INDOT pothole crews will be put on hold until the snow melts. But those delays will be only minor and should be easily absorbed.
