It may not be a record anyone wanted to set, but Indianapolis set it nonetheless.

Chuck Lofton says the overnight snowstorm that left 9 inches of snow in Indianapolis set a new weather record for the date.

National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Ryan said the total snowfall from Sunday was the most that has fallen in the city since 1912, when the state capital got 5.8 inches. The weather agency hasn't been able to find a greater total than the 9 inches for Sunday and Monday morning.

While it isn't all that rare for Indiana to get snow in March, Ryan says it is unusual to get so much.

The latest snow has fallen in central Indiana is early May, but that's just a trace. With warm ground and the sun higher in the sky, snow can't build up or stick around.

Fort Wayne also marked a new record.

The weather service reports 2.3 inches of snow fell in the northeastern city on Sunday, breaking the mark for that date of 1.7 inches set in 1912. Overall, Fort Wayne had 4.3 inches of snow from the storm as of 8 a.m. Monday.

The weather service says other northern Indiana cities reporting heavy snowfall were: Hartford City in Blackford County with 10.5 inches, Galveston in Cass County with 10 inches, Bippus in Huntington County with 8 inches, Logansport, Bluffton and Decatur with 7 inches each and Huntington with 6.5 inches.

These totals are from the National Weather Service in Indianapolis:

Covington 10.5"
Fishers 7.5"
Indianapolis International Airport 9"
Carmel 6.6"
Avon 6.2"
West Lafayette 5.8"
Muncie 5.5"
Richmond 4.5"
Martinsville 4"
Mooresville 4"
Shelbyville 4"

Most cities in central Indiana received 4 to 8 inches of snow.
