Group seeks changes in Purdue discipline policies

WEST LAFAYETTE -

A group representing Purdue University faculty is calling for changes in how disciplinary cases are handled but says it's encouraged by discussions with President Mitch Daniels and other administrators.

The Journal & Courier reports the American Association of University Professors has sent letters criticizing the university's due process and asking Daniels to change policies they say often make administrators judge and jury.

Purdue Provost Tim Sands says policies on tenure, sanctions and academic freedoms have been in place since 1977 and have been upheld in court.

The AAUP and Purdue officials are discussing creating a position for a mediator who would hear disputes or accusations in an effort to head off a formal grievance or investigation.

Sands says a mediator could help diffuse such situations.
