A.J. Hammons scored 15 points to lead Purdue to an 81-67 win over Western Illinois in the opening round of the College Basketball Invitational Wednesday night.
The Boilermakers shot 64 percent from three-point range and 59 percent from the field overall in the win. They will host Santa Clara Monday at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
Ronnie Johnson added 14 points for Purdue, who also got 12 points from Raphael Davis and ten from Terone Johnson. Nearly half of the Boilermakers' 81 points were scored in the paint.
Purdue outrebounded Western Illinois 29-21.
The win was coach Matt Painter's 176th on the Boilermakers' bench, tying him with Ray Eddy for third on the program's all-time coaching wins list.
