Chili Peppers' Chad Smith pushes for music funding in schools

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith says he's a prime example of why music education is needed in public schools.

Smith was part of a group lobbying Congress on the importance of music education yesterday.

Smith says he never took private lessons and he learned to play drums and read music in public schools. He says he wouldn't have graduated if it weren't for music classes.

For Smith, music education had an added benefit. He met his first girlfriend, a French horn player named Julie, in fifth grade music class.
