A central Indiana police officer who nearly lost his life in the line of duty was honored with a special award Monday night.

Fortville Police Officer Matthew Fox received the Theodore Roosevelt Police Award at a ceremony Monday. The award is given to officer who have overcome adversity.

Fox spent months in rehabilitation after he was shot nine times during an attempted traffic stop last summer. The driver he attempted to pull over got out of his car and fired a gun into Fox's cruiser.

"I'm very honored, very humbled to receive this. I think there are other officers in the state of Indiana who have been through adversity like I have and I'm very honored to receive this award for this year," Fox said.

Fox returned to his patrol in January. He says he's alive today because of his police training.
