University of Central Florida cancels classes after death, explosive found

ORLANDO -

Hundreds of students at the University of Central Florida have been evacuated following a suspicious death.

Officials say a student was found dead in a dorm from what they believe to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police say as they were investigating the death, they discovered an assault weapon and a number of improvised explosives were found.

Officials then quickly evacuated the dorm which houses approximately 500 students. A parking garage has also been evacuated.

A bomb squad has been called in to handle the devices.

"The victim appears to have a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Upon further investigation of the residence hall, the police found an assault weapon and what appears to be improvised explosive devices. That's why the tower remains evacuated and the garage is evacuated as well," said Grant Heston, UCF spokesman.

The university has cancelled classes through noon Monday as a precaution.

A statement on the university's website said the UCF Arena will open Monday morning to accommodate displaced students.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office and the FBI are assisting the UCF Police Department with the investigation. The Sheriff's Office's bomb squad is on campus to examine the IEDs found at the scene, according to a statement from the university.
