Calls overwhelm Indiana revenue department phones

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Calls about a new online tax filing requirement for businesses have clogged the Indiana Department of Revenue's helpline and some callers have been unable to get through.

The Indianapolis Star reports some callers are hearing an abrupt message that says "Thank you for calling. Goodbye." State officials acknowledged that some taxpayers can't get through because calls about a new filing requirement are flooding the phone system.

Revenue department spokesman Bob Dittmer says the department's call system has limitations and that the call volume has been huge. But the problem shouldn't affect collections because most businesses have until the end of the month to file their returns.

A law that requires all Indiana businesses to file sales and withholding taxes electronically went into effect Jan. 1.
