Pedestrian killed on I-70 in Indianapolis overnight - 13 WTHR Indianapolis

A Greenfield man was struck and killed on I-70 in the early hours of Friday morning.

Police say it happened near the 92 mile marker, just east of Mitthoeffer Road, around 1:40 a.m.

Several drivers alerted Indiana State Police that a semi may have struck a deer at that location. The drivers said the semi had front end damage and was stationary on the emergency shoulder.

When troopers arrived at the scene, they discovered that the semi had struck a pedestrian, not a deer, and the semi-tractor trailer was no longer at the scene.

The pedestrian, identified as Johnny Cole, 33, of Greenfield, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Marion County Coroner's Office. Police don't know why Cole was walking on the interstate. They did not find a disabled car in the area that he might have walked from.

Troopers found the semi at the Pilot Station on Mount Comfort Rd, exit 96.

The driver of the semi, Andres Ivan Cespedes Delgado, 40, of Miami, Florida, told a Hancock County deputy that he thought he'd hit a deer.

The driver was taken to Wishard Hospital for a consensual blood alcohol test. Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash.

Some lanes of I-70 were closed while police investigated the incident. All lanes are back open now.

Troopers will submit a crash report to the Marion County Prosecutor's Office for review.
