CLAY COUNTY -

A fatal crash in Clay County has closed the westbound lanes of Interstate 70 near Cloverdale.

State Police Sgt. Joe Watts says a semi-trailer was westbound on I-70 around 8:30 p.m. Thursday when it struck a tree that had fallen in a dark section of the roadway. The truck left the roadway and crashed into a ravine. The trailer moved forward and crushed the cab, killing the driver.

The driver who was pronounced dead at the scene has been identified as Robert J. Reedy II, 53, from Brazil, Indiana.

Two other semis were also involved in the crash. The drivers of those trucks were not injured, but their rigs sustained moderate to heavy damage.

Reedy's truck was loaded with canned grocery items. It's owned by Dart Express Trucking in Minnesota, according to Watts.

I-70 westbound was closed for nearly four hours for tree removal and crash clean-up. The westbound passing lane was opened at 1:45 a.m. to clear the back-up.

All lanes are expected to re-open in the next two hours.
