Mickey Maurer talks about beating prostate cancer - 13 WTHR Indianapolis

Eyewitness News spoke with community leader Mickey Maurer, who's helped support the facility years before he learned he had cancer.

Mickey Maurer was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year. He was the former Indiana Commerce Secretary under Mitch Daniels, the Chairman of the Indianapolis Business Journal and the attorney whose name is on the IU Maurer School of Law in Bloomington.

A more recent title is cancer survivor. Maurer is pretty "matter of fact" about his approach.

"You want to come through cancer a with a cure, because you don't want to run around in diapers the rest of your life and you want to be able to have sexual relations with your spouse and if you can beat all three then you can win the game," he said.

Maurer got radioactive seed treatment in Seattle last summer and now says is prognosis is great. But long before he was diagnosed, he was a supporter of the the Cancer Support Community.

The northwest side facility offers free programs like yoga, healthy cooking and family and caregiver counseling. More than 1,100 people in central Indiana used the program last year.

This weekend, the Laughing Matters gala will raise money to keep and expand the Cancer Support Community reach and Maurer will be honored with the Edgar Goldwasser Founders Award.

"It's also special because as a cancer victim I can help promote this important institution," Maurer said. "I think the most important thing for people to know is that it is a resource and it is a resource that can meet your needs, no matter what they are, whether they be small or large. It's such a versatile organization with regards to cancer. No one can not walk in there and not get something that they need."

SNL comedians Jon Lovitz, Chris Kattan, and Tim Meadows are performing at the sold-out event at the Lucas estate.
