Bob Dylan voted into American Academy of Arts and Letters

Posted: Updated:

Bob Dylan is getting some major props. He has been voted into the elite American Academy of Arts and Letters - making him the first rock star to be so honored.

Categories in the Academy include music, literature and visual arts. But an Academy official says they couldn't decide whether Dylan deserved to get in for his words or for his music - so they decided to make him an honorary member.

Whether it's a club he wants to be part of is unclear. To receive the honor, Dylan did accept membership into the Academy. But there's no word whether he will attend the induction ceremony in either April or May.

Dylan usually tours in the spring - and none of his shows are in the New York City area, where the ceremony will be held.
