ROME -

An Indiana seminarian in Rome will give one of the readings at the public Mass preceding the opening of the papal conclave.

Tony Hollowell of Indianapolis will read from the book of Isaiah during the Mass Tuesday morning.

Pontifical North American College Rector Monsignor James Checchio tells The Indianapolis Star he chose Hollowell because he's a leader among first-year students there and conclave organizers needed someone immediately.

Students who have experience reading and serving are regularly chosen to participate in ceremonies at the Vatican's St. Peter's Basilica.

Indianapolis Archdiocesan spokesman Greg Otolski says Hollowell is believed to be the first from Indiana chosen to participate in a conclave Mass.

The University of Notre Dame graduate taught math and science at Ritter High School before deciding to become a priest.
