INDIANAPOLIS -

A statewide crackdown on drunk drivers is getting results. This past weekend half a dozen arrests were made in the Indianapolis area and police say this concentrated effort is not over.

This was the first of three weekends about 250 police agencies statewide will be spending extra time and extra effort looking for drunk and impaired drivers on Indiana's roadways.

From Friday into Saturday, State Police arrested five impaired drivers, made one other alcohol-related arrest and one criminal arrest. They also issued nine traffic tickets.

All that took place at DUI checkpoints with 23 troopers taking part in the Indianapolis area alone. In addition to the checkpoint, they also used saturation patrols - additional troopers in specific areas looking for impaired drivers.

This effort coincides with March Madness and the St. Patrick's Day weekend. Last March, there were 524 alcohol-related accidents in Indiana. In those collisions, six people died.

Last year on St. Patrick's Day, there were 33 alcohol-related crashes in Indiana.

The concentrated effort continues through March 24th.
