Annexation request crimps Anderson land plan

LAPEL -

Efforts by Anderson officials to annex land to create an economic development corridor could be thwarted by a request from property owners who want to become part of the town of Lapel instead.

The Herald Bulletin reports a group of 10 landowners has proposed annexing about 30 acres of property stretching from the southeast corner of Lapel to Pendleton.

Lapel leaders say they support the idea.

Anderson Mayor Kevin Smith wants to annex about 17 square miles of land southwest of his city's limits to create an economic development corridor reaching south to Interstate 69 exit 214.

Smith's plan would be the largest annexation in 50 years. Many residents oppose it for fear schools, libraries and other agencies would lose property tax revenue.
