DETROIT -

Back in the 1960s, Berry Gordy gave the nation a peek at his feelings for Broadway - when NBC aired a special featuring The Supremes and the Temptations performing a series of Broadway hits.

Now, he is taking not just his music - but his personal story - to the Great White Way. "Motown: The Musical" begins previews today at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater.

The musical traces a career that created a legendary music label, some of pop music's brightest stars - and cemented Gordy's his own legacy as a hit-making machine. At age 83 and having departed from the music business, Gordy says he expects the musical to be his "last major endeavor in a creative way." And as he was with Motown itself, Gordy was a hands-on executive when it came to the musical.

Still, Gordy isn't ruling out something that might lure him back to the spotlight. He said if someone came up with "something bigger than Broadway," he "might be interested."
