Gun control protest outside statehouse - 13 WTHR Indianapolis

It's becoming a common sight at the statehouse on the weekends; protestors peacefully arguing about gun control. Lately the protestors have been "Moms."

"I prefer to protect my children with a gun. I can attack whoever is coming at us," said Melinda Porter with Indiana Moms Against Gun Control.

Melinda Porter lead nearly three dozen people outside the Indiana statehouse Saturday to protest possible gun control laws.  She recently formed the group, Indiana Moms Against Gun Control.

Around the corner to Porter's protest was the opposite viewpoint: the Indiana chapter of Moms Demand Acton for Gun Sense.

"We want common sense gun control is background check for all gun sales. Keeping track of large quantities of the sale of ammunition so the ATF can keep track when someone is purchasing thousands of rounds, banning assault weapons and high capacity magazines," said protestor Nicki McNally from Carmel.

The Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America organization was formerly called One Million Moms For Gun Control. The national organization changed their name to streamline their cause.

In just two months, the organization has tens of thousands of members with more than 80 chapters across the United States.

"When six and seven-year-olds can get mowed down in their own schools, we aren't going to sit back anymore," said McNally.

The Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense group argued they aren't against guns or the second amendment, but the other side of the statehouse disagrees.

"They don't have to own a gun. I just prefer them to take away our right to own a gun," said Melinda Porter.

Porter's group, Indiana Moms Against Gun Control, told Eyewitness News they'll plan to protest at the statehouse every weekend if the opposition is there as well:  "Gun control owners often feeling alone or like no one cares. We wanted to support them and tell them to stand up for constitutional rights."

Indianapolis native Shannon Watts founded the Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America organization.

Next Wednesday, the organization is sponsoring "Moms Take the Hill Day" in Washington, DC.

The purpose of the event is to encourage American moms from across the country to converge on the Capitol and meet with their Congressional representatives to discuss gun laws.
