The national round of the Rube Goldberg Machine Contest won't be held at Purdue University this year.
The Journal & Courier reports the March 30 competition will be held at the Center of Science and Industry in Columbus, Ohio, marking the first time it is being held outside West Lafayette.
The competition is named for the late cartoonist Rube Goldberg, known for his drawings of whimsical, complicated devices performing simple tasks. The contest was held at Purdue from 1949 to 1956 before being revived in the 1983 by the Theta Tau fraternity.
For years the competition has combined science with art, but now those two disciplines appear to be pulling apart the student organizers and the corporation that oversees its licensing and intellectual property.
