GREENWOOD -

A teenager in Center Grove had a very busy morning. He is being accused of stealing a car, breaking into another car and taking the police on a high speed chase.

The chase, which reached 100 miles per hour, ended after the teen flew off the road at the intersection of Fry and Howard Road. His car jumped a ditch and launched 30 feet in the air before crashing into a building. He was arrested after trying to flee the accident on foot.

The suspect has been identified as 19-year-old Jimmy Smith of Greenwood.

Police say the chase was in a car he allegedly stole earlier in the morning and took place after Smith was caught breaking into another car. Smith told the police he was thought he was overdosing on methamphetamine. He was taken to the hospital to be checked out.

According to police, Smith crashed the first car he allegedly stole, a 2005 Acura, as he pulled out of the victim's garage at around 4:00 am. The victim told police it's likely Smith broke into another car parked in the man's driveway, then used the remote to open the garage door and gain access to the Acura.

At around 5:24 am, Greenwood Police got another call from a resident in the 600 block of Savannah Drive. He told police he saw a white male getting into one of his vehicles parked in the driveway. When officers arrived in the neighborhood, they spotted the stolen Acura leaving the area. The officer turned on his lights and pulled behind the Acura to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver led the officer on a chase through Main Street, Howard Road and Fry Road.

The chase came to an end when the Acura hit a building on Fry Road, crashing through the exterior brick wall and coming to rest partially inside the office building.

Smith faces charges of felony theft and resisting once he is released from the hospital.
