WEST LAFAYETTE -

Two hundred middle school students from across Indiana will travel to Purdue University on Saturday to compete in a statewide math contest.

Mathcounts is a national nonprofit competition that promotes achievement in math. The event starts at 9:30 a.m. in Stewart Center on Purdue's campus. The final round begins at 1:45 p.m. in the Class of 1950 Lecture Hall and is free and open to the public. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

Competition co-coordinator Vincent Drnevich says the countdown round is a fast-moving event in which the top students from the morning competition respond to questions projected on a screen.

The top four mathletes will represent Indiana at the national competition in May in Washington, D.C.
