Lawrence hotel standoff ends

Posted: Updated:
CASTLETON -

An hours-long standoff at a Lawrence hotel is over.

Police and SWAT officers were at the scene all day negotiating with a homicide suspect in order to get him to surrender. The hotel was under lockdown for several hours.

Officers eventually threw tear gas into the man's hotel room on the fourth floor. Medics wheeled the man, identified as 41-year-old Brian Fegley, out on a stretcher from the Value Place Hotel on Pendelton Pike.

Police say Fegley is being treated at Wishard Hospital for a self-inflicted head wound and is listed in critical condition.

It started with the fatal shooting of a man in the Free Spirit Lounge in the 8100 block of North Shadeland Ave. early Thursday.

The victim, 33-year-old Elisha McAfee, was shot shortly before 1:15 a.m. Thursday, following an argument.

The Free Spirit Lounge is part of the Dollar Inn complex across from Community North Hospital.

Witnesses say there were only about five people inside the Free Spirit when the shots were fired. Apparently the argument between the suspect and victim had been going on for an hour or more before it escalated.
