A southern Indiana man accused of sexually assaulting and killing a 17-year-old girl has been formally charged.
Forty-nine-year-old Richard Carley Hooten of Clarksville was charged Wednesday with murder, rape, criminal deviate conduct, being a habitual offender and abuse of a corpse.
The fiance of Tara Willenborg found her dead by strangulation early Saturday, the day before the woman's 18th birthday. The Courier-Journal of Louisville reported her funeral was held Wednesday.
An affidavit filed in Clark Circuit Court says Hooten told police that Willenborg invited him into her apartment but after she refused his advances, he strangled her while raping her.
The abuse of the corpse charge alleges Hooten continuing raping Willenborg after he noticed she stopped breathing.
Hooten is being held in the Clark County Jail.
